Godfather of AI, Geoffrey Hinton Leaves Google to Raise Awareness about Risks of AI Technology

Geoffrey Hinton, one of the "Godfathers of AI", who won the Turing Award for his work in AI, recently quit his job at Google to speak about the risks of AI. Hinton is concerned about bad actors using AI for bad things, and worries that AI could eliminate rote jobs and possibly humanity itself as it begins to write and run its own code. He was happy with Google's stewardship of the technology until Microsoft launched the new OpenAI-infused Bing, challenging Google's core business and sparking a "code red" response inside the search giant. The device, which is built entirely for artificial intelligence, is completely standalone and does not require pairing with a smartphone. It responds to voice and gesture commands, can project a screen onto nearby surfaces, includes a camera that can identify objects and has translation capabilities.
